Richard L. Darling graduated from the University of Montana with a Bachelor of Arts in 1948, and a Master of Arts in 1949.
Darling attended the University of Michigan and earned a Master of Library Science (Master of Arts in Library Science, A.M.L.S.) in 1954 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1960.
Richard retired early in the late 1980s to earn a Master of Divinity from the General Theological Seminary in New York City.
Richard Lewis Darling served in the United States Army during World War II from 1943-1946.
By the time he completed his degrees at the Univesity of Michigan, he had already worked as a teacher at Choteau Public Schools in Montana, 1950-1951, and as a librarian at Michigan University High School in Ann Arbor, 1951-1956.
From 1956 he was appointed an assistant professor of library science at the University of Montana till 1959, as well as a coordinator of libraries for Livonia, Michigan, public schools from 1959 to 1962.
After earning his doctorate, Darling moved to Washington, District of Columbia to work as a school library specialist at the United States Office of Education's Library Service Bureau, 1962-1964.
During the late 1960s, Darling was a supervisor of libraries for Montgomery County Public Schools in Rockville, Maryland, 1964-1965, moving up to assistant director of the Department of Educational Media and Technology, 1965-1966, and director of Educational Media and Technology Department from 1966 to 1970.
From 1970 Richard L. Darling held a post as dean of School Library Service at Columbia University, New York where he remained until about 1985.
Richard was also a former president of the American Association of School Librarians and the Freedom to Read Foundation from 1974-1977.
After obtaining a Master of Divinity he was ordained as an Episcopal priest, and became an assistant at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Scranton, Pennsylvania, retiring only then when illness from ataxia forced him to quit.
Darling was the author and contributor to several books concerning library science, including Public School Library Statistics 1962-63 (1964), Library Facilities for Elementary and Secondary Schools (1965), Library Manpower: Occupational Characteristics of Public and School Librarians (1966), The Rise of Children's Book Reviewing in America (1968), and Authors of Books for Young People (1990) as well as to periodical American Libraries.
