Unmarried. Entered C.S.A. as private, April 21, 1861. Became major of artillery and engrs. serving in Army of Northern Virginia and Trans-Mississippi Department.

Professor engineering, University of Louisiana, 1865. Professor mathematics, Washington and Lee University, 1867. In law practice Baltimore. since 1869.

Member Baltimore City Council, 1899-1903. President Board Park Commissioners, Baltimore, Professor law, University Maryland, 1870-1905. Trustee Johns Hopkins University.

Vice president Johns Hopkins Hospital.
