(This is a new edition of the second volume of the biograp...)
This is a new edition of the second volume of the biography of the poet Robert Graves. The meeting of the two poets Robert Graves and Laura Riding in 1926 was the beginning of one of the most intense and contradictory love affairs in English literary history. Graves, married with four children, became obsessed by Laura's formidable intellect and magnetic personality. She became his muse and inspiration, and it was while they were together that he wrote most of his best work, including some of the finest love poetry written in the English language this century. The couple lived with Graves's first wife in a "menage a trois" which, with the advent of another partner intended for Laura, became a "menage a Quatre". Tensions and rivalries grew, and Graves and his mistress moved to Mallorca to make a life for themselves.

Charles Powys's eleven children form one of the most remarkable literary families of modern times. Three of the family have won enduring fame. Graves has written a survey of their lives which not only revises Malcom Elwin's earlier prtrait of what are likely to be definitive portraits of John and Theodore, for whom no full=scale biographies exist.

(A. E. Housman, romantic poet and classical scholar, is be...)
A. E. Housman, romantic poet and classical scholar, is best-known as the author of A Shropshire Lad and the meticulous editor of Manilius, the Latin poet of astronomy. In this first full biography, Richard Perceval Graves convincingly reconciles the two apparently conflicting sides of Housman's personality, and reassesses the reputation of a man who was something of a mystery even to his closest friends. 'This is bound to become the standard life.' John Carey, Sunday Times 'Dispassionate and well-researched.' Philip Larkin, Guardian
