From Introduction: "This book of keys had its inception in the need to provide teaching keys to common Iowa plants. Whatever merit the keys may have is owed to the generations of Iowa State students who have used them and suggested improvements. Since most of our land is cultivated and bears an exotic flora, we have included keys to most of the common cultivated crop and ornamental plants. A few very rare plants have been omitted for the sake of simplicity. Keys to the species of the various genera of grasses and sedges have been omitted because of the large additional volume their inclusion would have required...In addition to the main keys, supplementary keys to fruits, winter twigs of common deciduous trees, and to trees and shrubs which bloom before leafing out are included, along with a glossary of commonly used terms...."
