Joined 15th Regiment 1853. Volunteered to the Royal Scots Fusiliers, 1854. Served with them during the latter part of the Crimean Campaign, 1855-1856.
Present siege and fall of Sebastopol and Expedition to Kin burn (medal and clasp and Turkish medal). Zulu Campaign, 1879. Present at Battle of Ulundi (severely wounded, mentioned in despatches, medal and clasp, brevet of Lieutenant- Colonel).
Transvaal Campaign, 1880-1881. Commanded troops at siege of Potschefstrom, being thanked in district orders (wounded, mentioned in despatches, Aide-de-camp to Her Majesty). Burmese Expedition, 1886-1887.
In command of the Royal Scots Fusiliers and Thayetmyo District. Commanded the troops at the relief of Thabybin in Upper Burmah (mentioned in despatches, medal). District of Columbia (United States.) to His (or Her) Majesty 1882-1890.
Jubilee Medal 1887, and clasp 1897. Reward for distinguished service.
