Prior to his election to the Legislature, Jones served one term as the Eaton County Sheriff and had spent 31 years with the sheriff"s department. In 2016, Jones introduced a bill updating Michigan"s existing ban on sodomy, which states "a person who commits the abominable and detestable crime against nature either with mankind or with any animal is guilty of a felony" that is punishable by up to 15 years in prison. In Lawrence v.
