Rickey Medlocke is an American musician and multi-instrumentalist. He is known as the guitarist of the southern rock band Blackfoot as well as one of the members of American rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Medlocke is of Lakota Sioux and Cherokee ancestry on his father's side and of Scots-Irish descent on his mother's.
Rickey Medlocke was born on February 17, 1950, in Jacksonville, Florida, United States. His mother, Marilyn Medlocke, had just turned 16 when she gave birth to him. His biological father, a Native American by blood, wasn't around to bring the boy up, and the child would have been given over to the orphanage had his maternal grandfather not intervened. Paul Robert “Shorty” Medlock, who was of Scots-Irish descent, and his second wife, Ruby Juanita Chase, legally adopted Medlocke and raised him as their own. Rickey Medlocke has younger step-siblings from his mother's other marriage.
Rickey Medlocke was first taught to play a miniature banjo by his grandfather Shorty Medlocke, the very famous Delta blues musician and banjo player. He started to perform on stage at the young age of three. Rickey taught himself to play the guitar at the age of five and began playing the drum in his grandfather’s band from the age of eight.
Education
By age 5 Rickey Medlocke had taught himself to play guitar and by age 8 he was playing drums in Shorty's band, at local dances and auditoriums. Over the years Rickey's love of music and performing pushed him to excel at playing other instruments - mandolin, dobro, keyboards and particularly the guitar. Rickey also has a melodic singing voice and had taught himself how to sing and play guitar at the same time. Medlocke studied at Paxson High School in Jacksonville, Florida.
Rickey Medlocke embarked on his professional journey with the band ‘Blackfoot’ before joining Lynyrd Skynyrd as a session musician and contributed to some of the iconic songs of the band including ‘Wino,’ ‘White Dove,’ ‘Comin' Home,’ ‘The Seasons,’ ‘Preacher's Daughter,’ ‘Lend a Helpin' Hand,’ ‘Ain't Too Proud to Pray,’ and ‘You Run Around’ and ‘One More Time.’
In 1972, he rejoined Blackfoot and started touring with them. The band recorded songs like ‘Train, Train’ and ‘Highway Song’; the former was written by his grandfather Shorty while the latter was written by Rickey himself in collaboration the band’s drummer Jakson Spires. He continued to be part of the band till the late 1990s and then left to rejoin ‘Lynyrd Skynyrd.’
Rickey took up a fresh role upon his return to the band and became the lead guitarist and the songwriter after he was convinced by fellow band member Gary Rossington. He spent the ensuing years performing with the band in various tours and also often stepped away from the band to collaborate with various artists. He has worked with musicians like Blackberry Smoke and Shooter Jennings since he rejoined ‘Lynyrd Skynyrd,’ and has also appeared in various shows as a guest. He attended the grand finale of the reality show ‘American Idol,’ performing with the finalist Bo Bice in 2005.
In 2015 he got approached with the novel idea of allowing Blackfoot to be used once more but by a fresh crop of Jacksonville musicians. Medlocke consented, but on the condition that he maintain a background role as songwriter and producer for the otherwise all-new four-piece band. Southern Native, the debut album from this new incarnation of Blackfoot, released in August 2016 and overseen by Medlocke, recalls the undiluted spirit of their forefathers.
Rickey Medlocke is one of the central figures in the history of the Southern rock. He has enjoyed platinum-selling records and adoring audiences. Medlocke won for "Best Theme Song" for 'Native Colors' and "Best Long Form Film" for 'Homeland Nation.' and was inducted into the Native American Music Hall of Fame in 2008.
