琳賢 芝
Rinken Shiba was born in 1600 in Nara, Japan.
He held the rank hogen. The most well known of his works are the scrolls of pictures showing events in the history of the Great Buddha Hall of the Todaiji Temple (in three volumes) which was painted in 1536.
He is said to have died in the Keicho Era (1596-1614). The Ta-mon-in Nikki, a diary of that period, says that Rinken, son of Chamberlain Shiba, painted the main Buddhist image of the Chokokuji Temple, at the age of 14 or 15 (1578). It may be that both father and son were called Rinken. The family was one of artists for generations. Before Rinken, there were Sonkai, Kanshin and Keishun in the family, all being painters of Buddhist pictures holding the title of hogen.
