Bookkeeper, 1874-1889. With Saint Louis Republic, 1889-1890, Saint Louis Post-Dispatch, 1890-1892. Correspondent Post-Dispatch, in New York, 1892-1893, Sunday editor, 1893-1896.

Editorial writer, Saint Louis Republic, to 1902, except during Spanish-American War.

With Washington Times, October 1902-January 1903, then with Saint Louis Republic until August 1903. Since then special writer and dramatic editor Saint Louis Post-Dispatch.

Was Lieutenant in Light Battery A, 1st Missouri Artillery, but resigned. Re-enlisted in same at beginning of war with Spain, and served as gunner-corporal in Prize ring (The) campaign.
