Born in Edo. Was rendered an orphan at the young age of 13 and homelessly wandered about till he found a job with Nishimura, an exchange broker (1839).
He married the daughter of one Rmachi Minomura, a dealer in sugar, and while he was peddling his father-in-law’s commodities caught the attention of Tadamasa Oguri, accountant to the Shogunate, who introduced him into the financial world. He eventually became an exchange broker and his ability was spot- ted by the manager for Mitsui, the biggest exchange brokers at that time (1852). He displayed his remarkable financial genius by helping the Mitsui family raise the money which the Shogunate had demanded from the house. After this he became a regular member of the Mitsui group (1866),and it was mainly his genius which made the house of Mitsui what it became after the Meiji Restoration (1868). He was the first president of the Mitsui Bank, the first private one to be established in this country.
