Thompson started out his rugby career in Manawatu playing club rugby for University while working as a storeman. This form saw him named in the Crusaders wider training group for the 2014 Super Rugby season during which he made a total of 2 appearances. In October 2015, he revealed he signed a two-year contract with Dunedin-based Highlanders for the 2016 Super Rugby season.
After failing to crack the Manawatu Turbos Information Technology Management Cup squad in 2012, he headed south to try out for Canterbury"s Colts side. His development continued in 2013 when he was selected for the Crusaders Knights squad during the first half of the year and the Canterbury Information Technology Management Cup team in the latter part. Thompson was a key player as Canterbury were crowned 2013 Information Technology Management Cup champions, making 10 appearances and scoring 4 tries. Thompson scored his first hat-trick for Canterbury in Round 4 of the 2015 Information Technology Management Cup.
