Robert Anderson was commissioned into the infantry and saw frontier duty in the Washington Territory from 1858 to 1861.
Upon his resignation from the United States Army in late 1861, Anderson was appointed a first lieutenant of artillery in the Confederate Army and spent the early part of the war as acting adjutant general of troops on the Georgia coast and as aide-de-camp to General William H. T. Walker. In January 1863, Anderson gained a line assignment, and he participated in the successful defense of Fort McAllister, Georgia. Later, he was transferred to the Army of Tennessee, where he participated in the Atlanta campaign and was promoted to brigadier general of cavalry on July 26, 1864.
Anderson commanded one of the best divisions of General Joseph Wheeler’s Cavalry Corps. He surrendered in North Carolina in May 1865.
After the war, he ran his father's commission business and owned his own insurance firm. He also served as an advisor to the United States Military Academy. From 1867 until his death on February 8, 1888, he was chief of police for Savannah, Georgia.
Anderson saw battle throughout the Civil War as part of the Georgia Militia and as part of the Tennessee Army. He was promoted to Brigadier General in 1864 and lead his brigade against Union Forces during Sherman's March to the Sea. He also participated in the Carolina Campaign prior to the collapse of the Confederacy in 1865.
After the war, Anderson became the police chief of Savannah. He is still honored by the police of Savannah to this day.
After founding the Georgia Sabre Club, Anderson was elected to Captain of the Georgia Hussars from December 4, 1876, to February 1880.
Anderson's marriage to Sarah Clitz on December 3, 1857, produced two children.
