(Some of the most beautiful and fascinating objects create...)
Some of the most beautiful and fascinating objects created by American craftsmen of the past are the marvelous weathervanes and whirligigs that in recent years have become prized collectors' items. The appreciation of American weathervanes as works of art began during the early 1920s and has accelerated since then. The vanes have been made in many shapes -- arrows, banners, weathercocks, Indians, eagles, ships, fish, animals -- and more. The final section of the book is devoted to whirligigs or wind toys, whose sole function is to amuse us as they revolve in the breeze.

From paintings to sculptures in a variety of materials (wood, metal, stone, and whalebone) to a wide range of eagerly sought household objects, here is American folk art in all its fascination and beauty- pictured, discussed, appraised, and categorized specifically for the collector. In all, 377 representative examples of every major type are shown in brilliant full-color photographs along with information on origin and date, the artist or craftsman if known, and hints for collectors about authenticity and condition. Objects covered range from the relatively common to the rare, with an emphasis on those available to the average collector. Some date back to the 18th century, while others are only a few years old. "The Knopf Collectors' Guide to American Folk Art" is the first complete, practical guide to this highly popular but immensely complicated field of collecting: Folk Art.
