Robert Brandt was born on May 25, 1941, in Norris, Anderson County, Tennessee, United States. He is a son of Sandford F. Brandt, a writer, and Edith Brandt, a schoolteacher.
In 1963 Robert Brandt received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Centre College. In 1966 he obtained a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Vanderbilt University.
Robert Brandt served in United States Army and United States Navy in the 1960s. He served as an adjunct faculty member for twenty-five years at Vanderbilt University Law School. His articles have appeared in the Tennessee Historical Quarterly, the Tennessee Conservationist, and other periodicals. He is the author of five entries in the Tennessee Encyclopedia of History and Culture, including those covering events that are the backdrop for the novel Painted Trillium.
