Robert Brawley was born on December 26 in 1939, in Charlotte, North Carolina, United States. He is a son of John G. and Mary Alice (Boyce) Brawley.
He received his education at Erskine College in 1962. He also attended Erskine Theological Seminary in 1965 and Lutheran Southern Seminary. He became a Master of Arts in Theology in 1974. He also attended Princeton Theological Seminary and became a Doctor of Philosphy in 1978.
He started his career working as a professor of the New Testament at Memphis Theological Seminary in 1979 and since 1992 he works as professor of the New Testament at McCormick Theological Seminary.
