Brewster was the son of Francis Brewster, of Wrentham Hall, Suffolk.

He was a general in the Parliamentary army in the English Civil War. He matriculated from Pembroke College, Cambridge at Easter, 1617. He became a general on the Parliamentary Army.
He survived Pride"s Purge and sat until 1653.
In 1654 he was elected Member of Parliament for Dunwich again in the First Protectorate Parliament. He was elected Member of Parliament for Suffolk in 1656.
In 1659 he was elected Member of Parliament for Dunwich again.
In 1645, he was elected Member of Parliament for Dunwich as a recruiter to the Long Parliament.
