Even from the outset, it promised to be an extraordinary assignment for Jimmy Flannery - Chicago tough-guy and precinct captain of the 27th ward. Freezing winter temperatures had overloaded the generator at Lincoln Zoo and now Baby - the city's favorite gorilla - needs a place to stay.

(Lots of strange things get washed up in Chicago's sewers,...)
Lots of strange things get washed up in Chicago's sewers, and even tough Irishman Jimmy Flannery feels jumpy when he is sent to inspect old tunnels. He keeps thinking about those stories of kids flushing down baby alligators that grow up into the big man-eating monsters alive down in the dark. And it doesn't calm Flannery's nerves when he stumbles onto a body.

When it comes to Chicago politics, Jimmy Flannery knows where the bodies are buried. Sleuthing has definitely become part of Flannery’s job, and he does it with the same tough-nosed, hard-fisted elan that he exhibits in his battles with machine-made bureaucrats down at City Hall. Now, someone is thinning the “turkey herd” - that’s modeling talk for the hundreds of pretty girls who come to Chicago every year looking to be “discovered.”

The night was pitch black, filled with driving rain when the California Zephyr jolted to a stop on a desolate stretch outside McCook, Nebraska. Somebody pulled the emergency brake, catapulting Jake Hatch out of the train - and onto a severed corpse. He stumbled over the trousered bottom half. Someone else found the torso, neatly divided at the belt. It was Hatch's job to piece together the truth.

Robert Wright Campbell was born on June 9, 1927, in Newark, New Jersey, the United States. He was the brother of actor William Campbell and brother in law of Judith Campbell Exner.

Robert Wright Campbell was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean War. When he asked his brother William how much he earned for acting, he went to Hollywood after his discharge.
Campbell was a writer of screenplays, mysteries and crime novels. He began his career as an artist, studying painting at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and working as a freelance illustrator, but moved west in 1952. He met with success shortly thereafter, as his screenplay for Five Guns West was filmed in 1955. Other screenplays include the Academy Award-nominated The Man with a Thousand Faces, Machine Gun Kelly, Hell’s Angels on Wheels, and Captain Nemo and the Underwater City. In addition to writing more than a dozen film scripts, Campbell contributed scripts to such television shows as Marcus Welby, M.D. and The Loretta Young Show. His first book, The Spy Who Sat and Waited, was published in 1975 and nominated for a National Book Award and was followed by Circus Couronne in 1977. Campbell wrote several series of books featuring different characters, usually hard-boiled detectives such as Jimmy Flannery, Whistler - who had a first name but never used it - and railroad detective Jake Hatch of Omaha. In 1986 In La-La Land We Trust was published, detailing the seamier side of life in Los Angeles. The hit book created a new nickname for the City of Angels and started a series that included Alice in La-La Land, Sweet La-La Land and The Wizard of La-La Land.
Campbell also wrote several plays that were produced during the 1990s, including The Glendorian Reality and An Evening with Frost and Sandburg.
