Career
He appears in the Maryland records as early as 1643 as "barber-surgeon". After holding the office of sheriff of Saint Mary"s County there, he emigrated to Virginia. There, he became high sheriff of James City County and the sergeant-at-arms of the House of Burgesses between 1657 and 1658, and a leading burgess with the rank of captain in 1656, 1659-1660, 1660-1661, 1663.
