The Atlantic Flyway is a vast migratory corridor - the yearly route of a least three dozen wildfowl species, whose trip begins at breeding grounds as far north as Baffin Bay and ends as far south as South America. This superbly illustrated volume is a full-length portrait of that corridor, the millions of ducks, geese, and other birds that travel it, and the hunters who seek them over the dark waters or golden shores of bay and marsh.

He was born in Boston, Massachussets, the son of Samuel Elman, a merchant, and Bessie Marian Schmidt.
He received his early education in public schools in Syracuse, New York, to which the family had moved.
In 1918 he graduated from Harvard College with a B. S. (cum laude) and enrolled in the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
While a fourth-year student he conducted research with Lewis H. Weed and George B. Wislocki that resulted in a creditable publication on the spinal arachnoid granulations with special reference to the cerebrospinal fluid.
Elman had wanted to obtain further surgical training with Evarts A. Graham at Washington University in St. Louis, but since no position was available he spent the next two years, 1923-1925, as an assistant in pathology at the Rockefeller Institute, working with Peyton Rous and Philip D. McMasters; his research with McMasters led to a lifelong interest in pancreatic function.
In 1922 he received the M. D. and was appointed an assistant in surgery by William S. Halsted; he worked in the Hunterian Surgical Laboratory primarily under the direction of Walter E. Dandy.
Elman remained at Washington University in spite of paternal efforts to encourage his return to Syracuse and private practice.
Elman's research on the loss of serum protein in patients with severe burns, first published in 1936, was an important factor in the adoption of the technique of administering blood plasma in such cases.
It also led to his most important contribution, clinical and experimental studies of intravenous feeding with the amino acids of hydrolyzed protein.
This work was awarded the Samuel D. Gross Prize of the Philadelphia Academy of Surgery in 1945 and led to the publication of Parenteral Alimentation in Surgery, With Special Reference to Proteins and Amino Acids (1947).
Elman also contributed significantly to knowledge of pancreatic function and disease.
This project led to Surgical Care: A Practical Physiologic Guide (1951), which outlined a positive program of preoperative and postoperative care that differed from the traditional policy of "letting nature take its course. "
Between 1936 and 1952 six editions of his Textbook of General Surgery (written with Warren H. Cole) were published.
A microfilm copy of this collection is in the History of Medicine Division, National Library of Medicine, Bethesda, Maryland.
A portrait appears with the obituary notice, Transactions of the American Surgical Association, 1957.
