Joined 2nd Battalion Oxfordshire Light Infantry, 1883, and served with that regt. till commencement of South African war. Adjt. 1887, for 4£ years. Service principally in India, including the war on North-west Frontier, 1897-1898 (Indian Frontier medal and two clasps).
Joined 6th Regiment M.I. 8 February 1900, as Adjutant. Wounded at Paardeberg. Commanded Mobile Column, South Africa, 1901, to end of war (despatches twice, Queen’s medal, 5 clasps, King’s medal, 2 clasps, Companion of the Distinguished Service Order). Companion of the Distinguished Service Order 1900; Oxfordshire Light Infantry; Commanding 2nd Battalion.
