Gershon received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Massachusetts in 1989 and a Juris Doctor degree from Brooklyn Law School in 1992. The University of Massachusetts at Amherst, founded in 1863 as a land-grant agricultural college, had developed into the flagship campus of the Massachusetts public university system by the time of his undergraduate study.
Founded in 1901, Brooklyn Law School is an independent law school with a long tradition of preparing lawyers for practice in New York City and the surrounding region. Its location near Brooklyn’s courts, law offices, and government agencies placed Gershon's legal education within the professional environment in which he later worked.
Gershon was admitted to practice law in New York in 1992 and later gained admission to the United States District Courts for the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York in 1997. He began his legal career as an assistant district attorney in the Kings County District Attorney’s Office, serving from 1992 to 1996. The office is the principal prosecuting authority for criminal matters in Brooklyn, also known as Kings County.
After four years as a prosecutor, Gershon entered private practice in Brooklyn. His practice has included criminal defense, civil litigation, family law, and matrimonial matters. Earlier professional listings placed his office at 186 Montague Street, Fourth Floor, Brooklyn; later listings identified offices at 300 Cadman Plaza West and 142 Joralemon Street. His work has included representation in New York State courts and in the federal district courts of the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York.
Gershon has participated in professional and civic organizations connected with criminal defense, assigned counsel, and local public service. His documented activities include leadership in the Kings County Criminal Bar Association, committee service related to Brooklyn legal institutions, and work on the Assigned Counsel Plan for judicial districts in Brooklyn and Queens.
He also served as a trustee of the Syosset Central School District. His organizational activities combined professional participation in the New York legal community with local educational governance.
