Robert was born April 18, 1952, in London, England, United Kingdom; son of Edward William and Rose Elizabeth (Jones) Goffee.
Robert studied at University of Kent and received B.A. (with honors) in 1973 and Ph.D. in 1978.
In 1981 Robert began to work as the lecturer at University of Surrey in Surrey, England. Later, he worked at London Business School as the professor. In 1995 he became the department head of London Business School. In 1990 he was a managing partner of Creative Management Associates in London.
Goffee worked tightly with Richard Scase, interviewed fifty-four British women who began their own businesses and grouped them in four classifications. Goffee and Jones wrote the Character of a Corporation: How Your Company’s Culture Can Make or Break Your Business based on fifteen years of research and their experiences as consultants to companies such as Johnson & Johnson, Polygram, Heinekin, and Unilever. In a Library Journal review, Susan C. Awe concluded that Goffee and Jones show “how a company’s particular culture affects performance and how that culture can be changed.”
Goffee and Scase defined in their research, “Innovative Entrepreneurs” as highly qualified women who struck out on their own because of negative experiences in their jobs. They say these women consider their businesses their top priority. “Conventional Businesswomen” are less qualified and start businesses to supplement other income. Their families and homes are of the highest priority, with their businesses ranking lower. “Radical Proprietors” are wealthy and highly qualified women who go into business to help other women. Profit is not the main motive. The authors say “Domestic Traders” are similar to “Conventional Businesswomen” but start businesses to gain independence rather than income. They say the businesses of these women are hobbies, and their homes and families also come first.
Robert is a member of Academy of Management.
On October 14, 1978 Robert Coffee married Victoria Julie Marriott. Their children: Hannah Naomi, Tom Robert.
