Gurval attended Washington and Lee University from 1976 to 1978. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree at Brown University in 1980. Then he earned Master of Arts degree from University of California in 1982. 6 years later Gurval received his doctorate from University of California in Berkeley.
Gurval started his career as an assistant professor of classics at University of Oregon in 1989. The next year he went to University of California in Los Angeles, where he became an assistant professor. Since 1996, Gurval is an associate professor of classics at University of California.
