musician singer translator songwriter poet
Hunter was born Robert Burns on June 23, 1941, in Oceano, California, United States.
Robert Hunter met his future colleague Jerry Garcia before he was 20 years old, and the two played in several bands together before the Grateful Dead was formed. Hunter joined the Grateful Dead in 1967 as essentially a behind-the-scenes band member, writing songs. He penned some of the most well-known Dead songs, such as "China Cat Sunflower," "Friend of the Devil" and "Truckin'," which contains what might be the band's signature lyric: "What a long, strange trip it's been."
During his career Hunter also volunteered to be a test subject in government experiments with LSD and later wrote songs while under the drug’s influence.
In 1974, Hunter released the solo album Tales of the Great Rum Runners featuring himself as a singer songwriter. It was followed the next year by Tiger Rose. Neither attracted a large audience. Another of his solo efforts is the extremely rare recording Jack O' Roses, containing the extended version of "Terrapin Station Suite" and a solo rendition of "Friend of the Devil".
After the Dead broke up in 1995, Hunter continued to write for other musicians, including former member of the band Mickey Hart, Bob Dylan, and Bruce Hornsby, while also writing songs as a solo artist. Hunter also moved on to other projects, among them writing his own songs and poetry. Thus, Hunter published translations of Rainer Maria Rilke's Duino Elegies and the Sonnets to Orpheus and has published several volumes of his own poetry.
Among the recent works of Hunter, one can name his project with Jim Lauderdale in 2010, as well as his work on the Mickey Hart Band's albums, Mysterium Tremendum and the follow-up, Superorganism (as a lyricist). Also in 2012, he co-wrote four songs on Little Feat's album Rooster Rag.
Hunter is best known as a lyricist and co-songwriter. He collaborated as a lyricist with such musicians as Jim Lauderdale, Cesar Rosas, Mickey Hart, Bob Dylan, Bruce Hornsby, Greg Anton, Steve Kimock, David Nelson, Pete Sears and many others.
The majority of the Grateful Dead's original songs were written with the help of Hunter, although he was a non-performer in the band. The Grateful Dead was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 (with Hunter included as a member), and in 2015, Hunter and his partner Garcia were inducted into the Songwriter's Hall of Fame.
Hunter is also known for his poetry, which includes such works as A Box of Rain, Sentinel, Dog Moon, Glass Lunch, Idiot's Delight, Night Cadre and The Complete Annotated Grateful Dead Lyrics.
