(The end-is-near doomsayers are here disputed. The histori...)
The end-is-near doomsayers are here disputed. The historical Jesus would have strongly disagreed with the new apocalyptic mood of many current writers. In seven vivid New Testament studies, Dr. Jewett demonstrates what Jesus really had to say about the end of the world as we know it. He shows how unexpectedly different Jesusâ message was from common hopes, and how opposed it is to the teaching of modern sensationalists who speak of âthe Raptureâ as about to usher in a new dispensation. This book is for every reader who is puzzled by the great popularity of books about the end times â among both laity and the leaders of the churches. Through the use of contemporary literature and illustration, Dr. Jewett reveals how Jesusâ teaching can affect our lives. He says, âI am convinced that if we would get Jesusâ message straight, we would conclude that the future is still open and that there is a great deal we can do, because it is not Satan, but God who is alive and well on planet Earth.â

(The earliest of Paul's letters-the Thessalonian correspon...)
The earliest of Paul's letters-the Thessalonian correspondence-here undergoes a major reassessment in this provocative interdisciplinary and experimental study. Robert Jewett offers a combination of traditional historical-critical research, rhetorical analysis, and a comparative use of social-scientific theorizing to resolve mang dilemmas in 1 and 2 Thessalonians. He concentrates on discovering the interaction between the writer and the audience for clues. His thesis is that Paul was confronted with a millenarian radicalism in Thessalonica unparalleled elsewhere in early Christianity: "Only in Thessalonica do we encounter a group that proclaimed the actual arrival of the millennium and then proceeded to act on that assumption." In light of his detailed exegetical study, Jewett concludes that the "millenarian model" best explains the exegetical references and the historical evidence which disclose that Paul's apocalyptic gospel was misunderstood from the outset. ROBERT JEWETT is Professor of New Testament Interpretation at GarrettEvangelical Theological Seminary, Evanston, Illinois. He is the author of A Chronology of Paul's Life (Fortress Press, 1979) and is currently completing the Hermeneia commentary on Romans.
