Sir Robert John Kennedy was a British diplomat, author, and landed gentleman from County Down. His diplomatic career included postings in Madrid, Constantinople, St Petersburg, Sofia, Bucharest, Tehran, Cetinje, and Montevideo. He also wrote travel accounts of Persia, Central Asia, Montenegro, and the 1898 visit of Prince Nicholas of Montenegro to Queen Victoria.
Background
Robert John Kennedy was born at Bangor Castle, County Down, on 24 December 1851. He was the eldest surviving son of Robert Stewart Kennedy of Cultra and Anne Catherine Ward, whose family was connected with the Ward and Londonderry families of Ulster. He inherited the Cultra estate near Craigavad and was associated throughout his later life with Cultra Manor. On 9 August 1883 he married the Hon. Bertha Jane Ward, daughter of Henry William Ward, 5th Viscount Bangor. They had four daughters: Mary Grace Enid, Bertha Catherine Maud, Matilda Kathleen, and Lucy Emily Harriette. Kennedy died at Cultra Manor on 11 November 1936 and was buried there with his wife.
Education
Kennedy was educated at Harrow School and then attended University College, Oxford. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1874, with honours in law and history, and received the degree of Master of Arts in 1883. His education preceded a long diplomatic career in Europe, the Middle East, and South America.
Career
Kennedy entered the British diplomatic service in the early 1870s and became an attaché at Madrid in 1874, serving there until 1876. He subsequently held diplomatic appointments at Constantinople and St Petersburg, including service as third secretary at Constantinople and second secretary at St Petersburg from 1879 to 1881. He returned to Constantinople as a senior diplomatic secretary during the 1880s and also served as acting diplomatic agent in Bulgaria from 1882 to 1884 and as acting chargé d'affaires in Romania in 1886 and 1888.
From 1888 he was attached to the British mission in Persia, serving as first secretary and, from 1889 to 1891, as chargé d'affaires at Tehran. During this period he travelled extensively through northeastern Persia and Russian Central Asia, including a journey to Meshed, the Trans-Caspian region, Samarkand, Bukhara, and the Caspian coast. He later served as chargé d'affaires in Montenegro and became minister resident at Cetinje, where he remained until 1906. His diplomatic work brought him into close contact with the Montenegrin court; he represented Queen Victoria at the marriage of Prince Francis Joseph of Battenberg in 1897 and accompanied Prince Nicholas of Montenegro during the prince's 1898 visit to Britain. In 1902, by special request, Kennedy attended the Shah of Persia during the Shah's visit to England.
Kennedy was appointed minister resident at Montevideo in 1906 and became envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary to Uruguay in 1910. He retired from the diplomatic service in 1913. In public life in County Down he served as a deputy lieutenant and justice of the peace, was appointed High Sheriff of County Down in 1915, and was associated with the governance of the Royal Belfast Academical Institution and Campbell College. He was also a keen yachtsman, served as commodore of the Cultra Yacht Club, and took part in Red Cross work.
