Robert Kocharyan held different posts in komsomol and party bodies since 1980. He was one of the active participants and leaders of the movement “Karabakh” since 1988. “Karabakh” aimed at reunion with Armenia. Since February, 1988 he was one of the political leaders of Artsakh movement (Artsakh is the primordial Armenian name of Nagorno-Karabakh), he was a commander in bloody war for independence in 1988-1994. Though Karabakh still belonged to Azerbaijan, Kocharyan was elected as a deputy in Armenia Supreme Soviet. He served as a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the declared Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh in 1991; later in 1992 he held the post of the Prime Minister. He was the chairman of the Nagorno-Karabakh Defense Committee since August, 1992 to December, 1994.
The Supreme Soviet of Nagorno-Karabakh elected Robert Kocharyan to be the President of the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh on December 22, 1994. He had been holding this post till he left for Armenian capital in 1997.
Robert Kocharyan became the president of Armenia after winning in the second round of snap elections on March 30, 1998. The country was headed by a strict leader who can bend people to his will.
Kocharyan is in a state of grace. He observes main religious holidays, and takes part in them.
