He later moved to Cross, Wisconsin. He was wounded during the Battle of Gettysburg. On March 4, 1865, Lees married Mary Baertsch.
They had six children.
Lees died of a stroke in Louisiana Crosse, Wisconsin on September 21, 1908. He was elected Buffalo County, Wisconsin judge in 1881 and held the position until his death.
Lees was a Democrat.
Edward Lees, his father, was a member of the Assembly. During the American Civil War, Lees was a member of the 6th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment of the Union Army and served with the Iron Brigade. Lees was a member of the Assembly in 1873 before representing the 29th District of the Senate.
In addition, he was a member of the Alma, Wisconsin School Board.
