Robert Levering was born on February 4, 1944, in Kansas City, Kansas, United States. He is a son of George Burns and Lois May Levering (maiden name Schlaegel).
Robert Levering received his Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from Swarthmore College in 1966. Three years later, he had his Master’s degree in social change from the Social Change School of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Robert Levering began his career as a business journalist. The main subjects of his articles were bad workplaces and confrontation between employees and employers. In 1981, Levering and another author, Milton Moskowitz, joined their forces on the topic and published their first book titled ‘Everybody's Business: An Almanac’ which was followed by another volume, ‘Everybody’s Business Scoreboard’ three years later. Both editions were read by a New York editor who commissioned both authors to create a book ‘The 100 Best Companies to Work for in America’.
To complete the task, the authors traveled around the United States and examined four hundred companies then visited employees at 147 of those. Good marks were given for sharing the corporate wealth with employees, for providing a fun atmosphere, and for encouraging feedback from staff, among other criteria. Later, the journey led to more than 30 years of exploring great workplaces.
Soon after the publication of the book in 1984, it became a bestseller. The same year, ‘The Computer Entrepreneurs: Who's Making It Big and How in America's Upstart Industry’ also saw the publication. The authors profiled sixty-five computer hackers-turned-tycoons, focusing, Publisher Weekly remarked, “on those who abandoned the hacker ethic in favor of the appeal of the almighty dollar.” As a solo writer, Levering revisited twenty of the best and worst companies and interviewed many of their executives to produce four years later his book, ‘A Great Place to Work: What Makes Some Employers So Good – and Most So Bad’.
Interested in pursuing the study of best workplaces and in developing the strategies focused on amelioration of the workplace productivity, Robert Levering co-founded along with Amy Lyman ‘Great Place to Work Institute’ in 1991. Nowadays, it functions in about 50 countries and conducts surveys in more than 7500 companies.
As to Levering himself, nowadays, he lives and works in San Francisco, California, and chairs the Board of the GPTW Institute. He has co-authored Fortune magazine’s annual list of the “100 Best Companies to Work for”.

Quotations:
"A great place to work is one in which you trust the people you work for, have pride in what you do, and enjoy the people you work with."
"What all great workplaces have in common is a high level of trust between management and employees. The really bad workplaces always seem to lack this. Trust is the real key, the basis of everything."
Robert Levering has one son named Reuben.
