In 1949, he graduated from the University of South Carolina, where his father then headed the engineering school, and in 1950 from Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a MSci.
Career
He was active in various building companies including McCrory-Sumwalt Construction Company in the 1970s (as Executive Vice-President) and later Sumwalt Construction Company (where in 2003 he had retired from the posts of president and treasurer).
