Paquette obtained his Bachelor cum laude in 1973 from the Bowling Green State University, and his Doctor of Philosophy with honors in 1982 from the University of Rochester.

He is particularly known for his work on the history of slavery in Cuba. In 1994 he was appointed Publius Virgilius Rogers Professor of American History at Hamilton College. One of the controversies at Hamilton College was that Paquette complained when an independent student group brought Annie Sprinkle an actress and former porn-star, as a speaker.
Paquette later led an attempt to create the Alexander Hamilton Center on campus, but it was unsuccessful.
In 2008 Paquette cofounded an independed Alexander Hamilton Institute for the Study of Western Civilization.
