He attended Garrison School of Law, a branch of the University of Louisville, and practiced law in Lexington, Kentucky.

In 1933 he joined the army and became a regimental sergeant major before he was commissioned in 1943. He served on Omar Bradley"s staff in England and helped draft administrative plans for the Invasion of Normandy. He later served as Acting Adjutant General of the 5th Infantry Division (United States).
McDuff later served with the Far East Command in Japan and also was Deputy Chief of Personnel in the Adjutant General" General’ s Office.
In 1958 he retired from the Army and settled in Virginia where he died in April 1981. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
