He was born on March 29, 1935, in Bamako, Mali.
Robert N’Daw took a Bachelor of Science in Geology.
In 1960 he worked for the Mines and Geology Department, becoming the Director in 1961. In 1962 he was appointed to the National Mining Research Company (SONAREM), a state-controlled enterprise, as its director-general.
In August 1964 he became secretary-general of the Inter-State Committee for the Development of the Senegal River Basin (CIABRS) and in August 1969 the military government appointed him Secretary of State for Industrial Development.
He rose to full ministerial rank in September 1969 when he became Minister of Industrial Development and Public Works.
His technocratic background and expertise in the mineral and geological field were far more important than the fact that he was a minister under Modibo Keita. As a result he continued his career as a top mining adviser after the military coup. He was even pro¬moted by the military regime to full ministerial rank.
