(Religions say life was created by a powerful being with m...)
Religions say life was created by a powerful being with mystical powers. Science says life evolved from a soup of chemicals, clay, or even a supernatural force. According to Professor Robert Shapiro, both are wrong.

(Very Good; Dust Jacket - Very Good; New York: William Mor...)
Very Good; Dust Jacket - Very Good; New York: William Morrow & Company, Inc., 1980. First Edition and First Printing. Octavo, illustrated jacket, boards are 3/4 buff paper-covered and 1/4 black cloth with silver spine imprinting, 464 pp. Better than Very Good book in like jacket; book has a small dimple at top front cover and dustiness to top page edges; jacket has small-scale edge wear, one closed tear at top of spine. An important - and, for the topic, early and scholarly look at the title topic by two noted scientists. Among the points they make are two which are as true now as they were in 1980: ".life may be quite common beyond earth, but its forms and habitats will be incredibly different from those we are familiar with." Scarce first edition, first printing. L-DM-1

(This is an account of the race to find the complete genet...)
This is an account of the race to find the complete genetic code which defines every human and determines the way we're put together. The book demonstrates how this task has occupied researchers, from Mendel in the 19th century, through to Watson and Crick's discovery of DNA and after. It also takes a careful look at the ethical quandaries that mankind will be faced with once the research is complete.

(Part I covers the earlier history of genetic going back t...)
Part I covers the earlier history of genetic going back to Mendel and the "Pea Patch." Part II covers the 20th Century including an intriguing chapter, "The Terrible Typos." Part III deals with the Genome and personal identity. Finally, Part IV sees the directions for future research. There are ample notes, a bibliography and an index.

biochemist chemist university professor
Shapiro, Robert was born on November 28, 1935 in New York City. Son of Irving and Freda (Butler) Shapiro.
Bachelor of Science, City College of New York, 1956. AM, Harvard University, 1957. Doctor of Philosophy, Harvard University, 1959.
He is best known for his work on the origin of life, having written two books on the topic: Origins, a Skeptic’s Guide to the Creation of Life on Earth (1986) and Planetary Dreams (2001). He opposed the Ribonucleic acid world hypothesis, and held that the spontaneous emergence of a molecule as complicated as Ribonucleic acid is highly unlikely. Instead, he proposed that life arose from some self-sustaining and compartmentalized reaction of simple molecules: "metabolism first" instead of "Ribonucleic acid first".
This reaction would have to be able to reproduce and evolve, eventually leading to Ribonucleic acid. He claimed that in this view life is a normal consequence of the laws of nature and potentially quite common in the universe.
