(It started off like an ordinary day for Dr. Jeffrey Brews...)
It started off like an ordinary day for Dr. Jeffrey Brewster, assistant professor of psycho-sociology at Columbia University. He'd been six weeks old when the first crude satellites were flung into space back in 1957. During his childhood there had been Moon rockets and the space stations — then the joint American-Russian-manned expedition to the Moon in 1965, right after the collapse of the Soviet dictatorship. Mars and Venus had been reached as he grew up and a permanent base was established on the Moon in 1973. Now the day's papers reported that an expedition was ready to leave for Callisto, moon of Jupiter. But Dr. Brewster had a class to make and he was late. That was when the telephone rang and Mari, his wife, said, "Long distance from Washington." The caller was Colonel Chasin of Unsecfor — United Nations Security Force, the global and international army that policed the world in these days of relative peace and harmony. Chasin explained that a serious matter had come up, something.

Graduate student Tom Rice is thrilled to embark on his first deep-space archeological expedition. He is part of a team from Earth, venturing out in search of artifacts from a civilization that ruled the universe many millennia ago. Called the High Ones, the members of this long-gone society left tantalizing clues about their history and culture scattered throughout space. One such clue, a “message cube” containing footage of the ancient ones, is more interesting than all of the others combined. It seems to indicate that the High Ones aren’t extinct after all – and just like that, Tom Rice’s archeological mission has become an intergalactic manhunt, one filled with ever-increasing danger that will send the explorers hurtling headlong into the greatest adventure – and peril – of their lives.

(The peaceable Pueblo Indians seemed an unlikely people to...)
The peaceable Pueblo Indians seemed an unlikely people to rise emphatically and successfully against the Spanish Empire. For eighty-two years the Pueblos had lived under Spanish domination in the northern part of present-day New Mexico. The Spanish administration had been led not by Coronado’s earlier vision of god but by a desire to convert the Indians to Christianity and eke a living from the country north of Mexico. The situation made conflict inevitable, with devastating results.

In the far future, Earth is a worn-out backwater and humanity is spread across the galaxy on worlds that began as colonies, but now feel like home, each with its own long history of a thousand years or more, and each with its own unique culture. One of the strangest is on Borthan, where the founding settlers established the Covenant, which teaches that the self is to be despised, and forbids anyone to reveal his innermost thoughts or feelings to another. On Borthan, the filthiest obscenities imaginable are the words "I" and "me."

Robert Silverberg was born on January 15, 1935, in Brooklyn, New York, United States. He is a son of Michael and Helen (Bairn) Silverberg.
Robert Silverberg attended Columbia University where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1956.
Robert Silverberg started his career as a writer in the 1950s. He wrote stories to the science fiction magazines and his first book Revolt on Alpha was published in 1955. Later he wrote such books as The 13th Immortal, Master of Life and Death, The Shrouded Planet. When the market for science fiction collapsed in 1959, Silverberg turned to write articles for popular magazines.
During the 1960s, Silverberg maintained a rapid writing pace, publishing nearly two million words per year. He wrote not only juvenile nonfiction works but science-fiction novels. He wrote some of his books under a pseudonyms Walker Chapman, Robert Randall, Webber Martin, Alex Merriman, and Lloyd Robinson. In addition to his voluminous work as a writer, Silverberg has also influenced science fiction with his work as an editor.
The years of prolific writing finally ended in the mid-1960s because of the stress. Silverberg announced his retirement from writing in 1975. However, he returned in 1980 with his new book Lord Valentine's Castle, the first book of the Majipoor Cycle. This cycle includes seven novels written between 1980 and 2002. Besides, Silverberg wrote such novels as The Face of the Waters, The Positronic Man, Starborne, Roma Eterna. His latest book Musings and Meditations was published in 2011. In a 2015 interview, Silverberg said that he did not intend to write any more fiction.

1990Quotations: "When I was a boy, I read science fiction and it did wonderful things for me. It opened the universe to me. I feel a sense of obligation to science fiction to replace what I had taken from it, to add to the shelf, to put something there for someone else that would do for them what other writers had done for me."
Robert Silverberg was president of Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America from 1967 to 1968.
