Robert A. Spivey was born on May 25, 1931, in Suffolk, Virginia, United States. He is a son of Joseph Atwood and Wortley (Roberts) Spivey.
Robert A. Spivey studied at Duke University where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1953. He also attended Union Theological Seminary and received a Bachelor of Divinity degree in 1956. Spivey received his Doctor of Philosophy degree from Yale University in 1962.
Robert A. Spivey started his career as an assistant instructor in New Testament at Divinity School at Yale University in 1958 and held this post until 1960. In 1960, he became an assistant professor of religion at Williams College and in 1965 he took up a post of a professor of religion at Florida State University where he worked until 1978. Spivey also worked as a provost of the Division of Arts and Sciences at Florida State University from 1974 to 1978.
Robert A. Spivey wrote his first book Anatomy of the New Testament together with D. Moody Smith in 1969. Later he also wrote such books as Religious Issues in American Culture and Religious Issues in Western Civilization. Spivey also was a contributor to academic journals, including the Journal of Church and State, Interpretation, and Southwestern Journal of Social Education.
