He earned his Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Wesleyan University in 1965 and his Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Minnesota in 1970.

Doctor Thorndike taught at Teachers College, Columbia University, during the 1970s. He has taught at Western Washington University since 1970. He is a Fellow in the American Psychological Association, Division 5.
In 1994 he was one of 52 signatories on "Mainstream Science on Intelligence," an editorial written by Linda Gottfredson and published in the Wall Street Journal, which declared the consensus of the signing scholars on issues related to race and intelligence following the publication of the book The Bell Curve.
