Stevenson is the son of James Alexander Stevenson and Elizabeth Anne Stevenson (née Macrae).

Stevenson was educated at Edinburgh Academy, at the time a boarding independent school for boys (now a co-educational day school), in the city of Edinburgh in Scotland, followed by University College at the University of Oxford, where he obtained an Master of Arts in Natural Sciences, Chemistry and at Napier Polytechnic (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants).
