Wilson was born in Chicago, where he attended and played high school football at Austin Community Academy High School.

He played professionally in the National Football League (NFL) with the Washington Redskins. He was drafted in the first round of the 1991 NFL Draft by the Redskins. While in high school, he also participated in wrestling and shotput.
Wilson attended and played college football at Michigan State University.
Before attending Michigan State, he spent his freshman year at Northeastern Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College, a junior college in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Wilson was drafted in the first round with the 17th overall pick of the 1991 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins, where he played from 1991 to 1994.
