Articled with late Sir Charles Lanyon, Member of Parliament, Commander of Order of Leopold, and afterwards was his chief assistant in carrying out important engineering works, including the Belfast and Ballymena Railway. Subsequently acted for several years as engineer to late William Dargan on the Dublin and Galway Railway. Commenced practice as architect and civil engineer in Belfast on his return early in the ’fifties, and was joined in partnership by John Mackenzie and later by his son, R. M. Young, in the firm of oung and Mackenzie, of which he is still a member.
Chairman of the Lagan Navigation Company and of the Linenhall Library, Belfast.
An ex-President of both the Belfast Literary Society and Belfast Natural History Society. Professional Corporation Ireland; Justice of the Peace Company Antrim. Architect and Civil Engineer.
