(The huge, sprawling metropolises of the twentieth century...)
The huge, sprawling metropolises of the twentieth century are symbols of our time. They house not only most of the people, but also contain the dominant share of wealth, the most business and industrial activity, most of the jobs and the highest quality and greatest variety of cultural and social amenities. However at the same time, these center suffer problems resulting from their explosive growth and the need to adjust to technological changes such as the switch from the railroad, to the auto, to the airplane. Today's cities are molded by the opposing forces for centripetal and centrifugal attraction as identified by geographer Charles Colby in the 1930s
