( The Biology of Cancer is a textbook for undergraduate a...)
The Biology of Cancer is a textbook for undergraduate and graduate biology students as well as medical students studying the molecular and cellular bases of cancer. The book presents the principles of cancer biology in an organized, cogent, and in-depth manner. The clarity of writing and the lucid full-color art program make the book accessible and engaging. The information unfolds through the presentation of key experiments which give readers a sense of discovery and provides insights into the conceptual foundation underlying modern cancer biology. The Biology of Cancer synthesizes the findings of three decades of recent cancer research and proposes a conceptual framework from which to teach about these discoveries. It provides the necessary structure, organization, and content for a course on cancer biology for advanced undergraduates and beginning doctoral students. The book is comprehensive and offers many pedagogical features to assist teaching and learning. The book includes many recent and topical references, and is intended to empower the student to move directly into the primary research literature. The text is up-to-date and provides current information on topics such as tumor stem cells and recently introduced chemotherapeutics. State-of-the-art techniques are discussed throughout. Modern biomedical research is explored, helping readers to hone their analytical abilities and to assimilate and think clearly about complex biological processes. The Biology of Cancer provides insights into many aspects of immunology, developmental biology, and neurobiology. The exceptional full-color art program contains many images published for the first time. The book is extensively illustrated with schematic drawings, micrographs, computer-generated models and graphs. The pieces were chosen to support and clarify the concepts, as well as to supply additional interest. Besides its value as a textbook, The Biology of Cancer will be a useful reference for individuals working in biomedical laboratories, and for clinical professionals.

biochemist university professor molecular biologist
WEINBERG, Robert was born on November 11, 1942 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. Son of Doctor Fritz E. and Lore W. (nee Reichh"ardt) Weinberg.
Bachelor of Science, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1964. Doctor of Philosophy, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1969. Doctor of Philosophy (honorary), Northwestern University, Illinois, 1984.
Doctor of Philosophy (honorary), Uppsala University, Sweden, 2007. Doctor of Science (honorary), Tufts University, 2009.
His research is in the area of oncogenes and the genetic basis of human cancer. He teaches at Massachusetts Institute of Technology including course 7.012 (introductory biology) with Eric Lander. Weinberg and Lander are among the co-founders of Verastem, which is a biopharmaceutical company focused on discovering and developing drugs to treat cancer by targeting cancer stem cells.
He is best known for his discoveries of the first human oncogene Ras and the first tumor suppressor gene Rbp.
371-381, which is partially documented in Natalie Angier′s book, Natural Obsessions, about her year spent in Weinberg"s laboratory In the late 20th century, advances in genetics led to the discovery of over one hundred cancer cell types.
Cancer cells were noted for their bewildering diversity. lieutenant was hard to identify the principles that cancers had in common.
He and Douglas Hanahan wrote the seminal paper, "The Hallmarks of Cancer", published in January 2000, that gave the six requirements for one renegade cell to cause a deadly cancer: In 2011, they published an updated review article entitled "Hallmarks of cancer: the next generation".
Weinberg is well known for both his cancer research and for his mentorship of many eminent scientists, including Tyler Jacks, Clifford Tabin and Cornelia Bargmann. He is currently studying cancer cell metastasis. He is also the author of the textbook The Biology of Cancer published by Garland Science.
To this day Weinberg has retracted five research papers where he is listed as author
The retractions include one paper in Cell, one in Cancer Cell, two in Genes & Development and one in Cancer The reasons given for these retractions remain obscure but appear to involve a form of data manipulation that renders the published data invalid or false. Foreign example, in the retracted Cell paper of 2009, the authors inform the readership that “original data were compiled from different replicate experiments in order to assemble the presented figure.
The scope of the figure preparation issues includes compiling data from independent experiments to present them as one internally controlled experiment, statistical analyses based on technical replicates that are not reflective of the biological replicates, and comparisons of selectively chosen data points from multiple experiments.”.
