This book represents a resurrection of common sense. It presents a number of strategies, taken from the pages of nutritional literature, the herbal pharmacopoeia, and a book of old wives tales (bless their hearts, they knew a lot). Not being burdened with a medical degree, the author was free to roam the literature, sampling and recommending diverse treatments. In most cases he has tested them on himself, in the tradition of the pioneers of medicine of all times. His explorations and his readings have led him to the astonishing conclusion that we were built to live 120 healthy, happy years! What an astonishing idea! Nothing in contemporary medicine contains such a radical notion, and yet there are societies in which people routinely live to that age and more. These are generally mountain dwelling, fairly isolated people who have little or no technology to make them sedentary, and little or no pollution to make them sick. For those of us who dwell in the "First World", the highly technological societies, far removed from nature, a certain commitment must occur in order to maintain a clean internal environment, provide the body with the nutrients and exercise it requires and develop a life style that allows for spiritual renewal on a regular basis. We are seeing these days a tremendous surge of popular interest in regaining control over one's own health. The national media has caught this trend and is disseminating it throughout the country. The people who were once labeled "health nuts" are now teaching classes for newly converted couch potatoes determined to lose that paunch, or beat the reaper when illness finally does break through the surface of denial.
