Robert Grant was born on October 3, 1933, in New York City, United States, the son of Albert L. and Rose Dorothy (Livingston) Grant.
Robert received a Bachelor of Arts from New York University in 1955, a Master of Arts from Columbia University in 1957. He also earned a Doctor of Education from Columbia University in 1970.
Robert Grant began his career as a teacher at New Rochelle High School, New York, 1957-1960, then he came to Roslyn High School, New York, 1960-1967. He served as assistant professor at Columbia University Teachers College, New York City, until 1971. After that, he came to Trinity College on the position of associate professor. In 1972 he transfered to Framingham State College on the same position, where he stil works as professor of history and education.
Besides teaching, Grant is also the author of several books, which include: The Black Man Comes to the City (1972), Surveying the Land (1991), and The Great Trials of the Twenties (1998). The latter he wrote together with Joseph Katz, also a history professor at Long Island University.

Robert married Frances Dancygier on September 6, 1953. They have two children: Ruth and Paul.
