He served as the seventh Chancellor of the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Mississippi from 1892 to 1906. He taught in Alabama and in New Orleans, Louisiana. In 1871, he became Assistant Professor of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Mississippi.
By 1875, he was a full Professor.
He went on to serve as its seventh Chancellor from 1892 to 1906. Additionally, he served as President of the National Association of State Universities for five years.
