Privately; Addiscombe College. Obtained Commission in Bengal Engineers, 1853, which Corps was amalgamated with Royal Engineers in 1860.

Retired, 1892.
Served during Indian Mutiny Campaign, siege and assault of Delhi (slightly wounded at assault), capture of Lucknow (medal and two clasps, despatches). Held various appointments in the Indian Public Works Department between 1857 and 1892, including Director-General of Railways, and Secretary to Government, and served for fourteen months as temporary member of Viceroy’s Council. Decorated for military and civil services.
Major-General on Retired List R.E. Deputy Chairman Indian Midland Railway Company. Director Great Indian Peninsula Company.
