STEWART, Robert Crosse was born on March 15, 1825. 3rd and o. surviving c. of late Major Archibald Stewart, Knight of Hanover, Rifle Brigade, and Eliza, only child of late Robert Crosse of Barrachnie, Lanarkshire.

Studied at Elizabeth College, Guernsey. Privately. Recommended by Duke of Wellington to the Queen for a commission, without purchase, on account of his late father’s services in the Peninsula and Waterloo in the 95th Rifle Corps.
Gazetted to S4th Regiment 1842. Passed as interpreter in Hindustani at the Madras College, 1845, and appointed interpreter to his regiment. During the years 1854-1856 was Assistant Executive Engineer, Rangoon.
Assistant Telegraph Department and Assistant Topographical Survey, Burma.
Exchanged to Rifle Brigade, 1856, and on the reduction of the army after the Crimea was posted to the 35th Regiment. Appointed interpreter to 7th Hussars on their arrival in Calcutta, 1857, and was present with them at the storm and capture of Meeangunge.
Deputy-Assistant-Adjutant-General 2nd Division at siege and capture of Lucknow, March 1858 (severely wounded, horse wounded in three places. Despatches, medal with clasp, and Brevet of Major).
Passed Staff College, 1861.
A. District of Columbia (United States.) to Sir Doctorate. Russell, Aldershot, 1863-1864. Deputy-Assistant-Adjutant-General Headquarters of the Army, 1865-1870. Assistant Military Secretary Ceylon, 1870-1872.

Represented the Madras Army at the Imperial Assemblage at Delhi, 1 January 1877. Governor and Commandant, Netley Hospital, 1878-1880, during which time (13 August 1879) had the honour of receiving the Queer when Her Majesty visited the wounded from South. Africa, and decorated Private Hitch, 24th Regiment, with the Victoria Cross.
