The firm had its origin in 1929 when C. Earl Hovey and Roy Hamilton announced their association as Hovey and Hamilton, at the Federal Reserve Bank Building in Kansas City, Missouri. The firm evolved as Hovey, Schmidt, Johnson and Hovey, until Earl Hovey's death in 1959. At that time, the present partnership structure was initiated, and the name of the firm changed to Schmidt, Johnson, Hovey & Williams.
