Studied at Fettes College, Edinburgh. Royal Military College Sandhurst.
Joined the 1st Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment, 1885. Battalion Adjutant, 1892. Served Nile Expedition, 1898, with the 13th Soudanese Battalion of the Egyptian army, including the battles of Atbara and Khartoum (despatches, British medal and Khedive’s medal with two clasps).
Passed Staff College, 1899. Served South African Campaign, 1899-1902, first as Aide-de-camp to Major- 2147 General Sir H. Macdonald, Knight Commander of the Bath, commanding the Highland Brigade, afterwards as Deputy-Assistant-Adjutant-General at Army Headquarters (despatches, Queen’s medal with live clasps, King’s medal, 2 clasps, Companion of the Distinguished Service Order). Companion of the Distinguished Service Order 1902; General Staff.
