In this (1971) volume, Forman studies the problems of housing and residential segregation in the modern black ghetto, which began with the Great Migration of blacks to the North during World War I. He compares present-day black ghettos to those that confined the Irish, Italian, Eastern European and other immigrants, finding some startling similarities in the ways used to keep "undesirable" groups out of "respectable" neighborhoods. Forman's analysis exposes the basis of misinformation, fear, and false logic that supports racial residential segregation, and describes various means being used to combat this injustice.
